It’s the same old story, really.

Good versus evil.

Heroes versus villains.

Light versus dark.

For two years, college freshman Noah Morgan lived his life somewhere in the middle, fighting darkness and light, always searching for answers to a single question:

Why, Noah, why?

The same three words keep him up at night, struggling for air while gripping a plastic cylinder containing white pills to match the white label with his name printed in ink as deep and dark as his memories—memories that turned him into a recluse.

A shut-in.

An introvert.

Luckily for him, that’s not how the girl next door sees him.

Sometimes, there is no reason, and there are no answers. There just is.

What do you do when one of your top favorite authors releases a new book out of no where? You drop everything and read it. When I saw Darkness Matters was live, I dropped my current read like a hot potato and jumped into this one. Jay McLean’s words are everything. This book was different than her others, but still, it was epic. It made me feel, made me think, and touched my heart.

Darkness Matters is Andromeda’s story. Well, Andromeda and Noah’s story. Andie went through something and is now getting back on her feet. A fresh start. She’s living with her twin sister Milky, and Noah is her new neighbor. The story was told from three pov’s and I think that was wise. I loved getting the present and the insight from the past.

I don’t want to talk too much about the story, but it had much to do with personal growth and overcoming obstacles. Andie had been through so much and had much to still overcome. Noah’s story was just as hard to read as Andie’s in a different way. I loved both of these characters, but Noah… he was just an ah-mazing hero!

“Noah?” she asks, and I lift my gaze.
“Say something beautiful?”
My response is instant. “You.”

Jay’s words matter so much to me. There is a reason she is one of my favorite authors. I love the message that is in this story. Her writing leaves me at a loss for words. Her stories always stay with me. Darkness Matters was intense, powerful, twisty, beautiful, and moving. It’s a unique book that needs to be read! The ending felt a little abrupt, but it worked for the story IMO. I give it a full 5 stars!

“Your darkness matters.”
